Service Overview

APS-231 optimized low-power PSU configuration

The APS-231 is a later Sony PlayStation 3 power supply with substantially lower maximum output capacity than the APS-226. Rather than installing it as a simple replacement, we use the APS-231 as part of a complete reduced-power Frankenstein configuration.

At iKon Technical Solutions, an APS-231 is not installed in a backward-compatible FAT PS3 without CELL and RSX voltage optimization. Undervolting is required as part of our APS-231 configuration.

Why?

The APS-226 provides approximately 384 watts on its 12V rail, while the APS-231 provides approximately 282 watts. That is a reduction from 32A to 23.5A of available 12V output capacity.

The APS-231 therefore should not be viewed as simply a smaller interchangeable version of the APS-226. Our goal is to first reduce the electrical demand of the restored console and then match the PSU configuration to that reduced load.

APS-231 electrical profile

  • AC input: 100-240V, 50/60Hz.
  • Primary 12V output: 23.5A / approximately 282W.
  • 5V output: 0.6A / approximately 3W.
  • Total rated output: approximately 285W.
  • Published efficiency range: approximately 79.2-81.4%.
  • Power class: Reduced-capacity / optimized Frankenstein configuration.

Why undervolting is required

CELL and RSX operating voltage directly affects system power consumption and thermal output. Reducing unnecessary voltage reduces current demand and heat generation, but voltage cannot simply be lowered arbitrarily. Every completed system must remain stable across startup, idle operation and sustained processor/GPU load.

Before an APS-231 is approved for one of our backward-compatible Frankenstein builds, the CELL and RSX power configuration is optimized and the completed console is tested as a complete electrical system.

This gives us two benefits at the same time: less heat generated by the processors and lower demand placed on the power supply.

APS-231 vs. APS-226

The APS-231 is not inherently a higher-capacity or higher-efficiency PSU than the APS-226. The APS-226 remains our high-headroom option. The APS-231 instead becomes useful when paired with a properly optimized console whose electrical demand has already been reduced.

Think of the APS-226 as our high-headroom configuration and the APS-231 as our optimized low-power configuration.

Best for

  • Frankenstein systems receiving CELL/RSX voltage optimization.
  • Customers pursuing the lowest practical total thermal load.
  • Premium builds where the PSU is selected as part of the complete power and cooling strategy.
  • Systems that pass our post-modification electrical load and stability testing.

APS-231 requirement: CELL/RSX Voltage Configuration / Undervolting must be performed with this PSU option. We do not install the APS-231 as a standalone power-supply swap on high-power backward-compatible systems.

Premium Packages Customized to your budget.

  • Built around professional PS3 hardware restoration, not temporary heat-gun patches.
  • Designed for CECHA01, CECHB01, CECHE01, and related backwards compatible FAT PS3 service evaluation.
  • Final recommendation depends on console condition, previous repair attempts, model, symptoms, and inspection results.
  • Additional paid work is not performed without approval.
