PS3 CMOS/BIOS battery replacement
The CMOS/BIOS battery helps the PS3 retain certain clock and system information while the console is unplugged. On older FAT PS3 consoles, the battery may be weak or dead simply due to age. During a restoration job, replacing it is a small but sensible maintenance item.
This is not usually the cause of major YLOD or GLOD hardware failure, but it can create annoying date/time issues and is easy to address while the system is already open for service. We can also test the existing battery before replacing it.
Why replace it during restoration
A Frankenstein repair is often performed on consoles that are 15+ years old. If the system is already being torn down for RSX work, thermal service, cleaning, or drive work, replacing an aging CMOS battery helps complete the refresh.
